Take a step outside and what do I see?

Cows basking in sunshine having eaten their tea.

The chickens are scratching for corn that they find,

Although, secretly hoping to find bacon rind.

Mmm food, that reminds me, must go pick some veg

for the boys I see working over a far away hedge.

The sound of the combine across the valley I hear.

The fact it’s still working fills me with cheer.

They’ll need nourishment soon as evening draws nigh.

It’s the least I can do to help them get by.

Tonight’s field Dinner was a family affair.

A roast dinner picnic with only one chair.

The food all home grown from the garden outside,

helps feed my family, that fills me with pride.

The dogs kept it interesting, well, what I mean

is Phoebe got lucky and ran off with the cream

Then its back to work for the men in the field,

cos rains due tomorrow which would ruin the yield.

And its home for young Alex, brushed teeth, bath and bed

Who am I kidding? he’ll be playing with toys under covers instead.

That just leaves me blogging to finish my day,

while I wait for my husband, still working away

Goodnight to my world of cows, chickens and wheat,

of barley and straw and wellies on my feet

The last rays of sun disappear behind trees.

Take a step out of your door, what will you see?
